Knob & Tube Replacement

Upgrade old wiring to today’s standards and enjoy greater safety and energy efficiency.

Knob & Tube Replacement

Knob & tube wiring was good for its era, but its era ended decades ago. It has no ground, the insulation degrades, modern insulation traps heat against it, and most home insurers now require it to be removed before they’ll renew a policy. We trace it through the house, replace it section by section, and provide the ESA documentation your insurer asks for.

Often paired with panel upgrades, renovations & additions, and residential electrical. We coordinate the whole job under a single permit when it makes sense.

FAQ

Knob & Tube Replacement: questions we hear most.

Real answers from a master electrician. If you don’t see yours, call directly and we’ll work through it.

My insurance company says I need to remove knob and tube. Why now?
Most Canadian home insurers will not renew coverage on properties with active knob and tube wiring. The insulation degrades, modern attic insulation traps heat against it, and there is no ground path for fault current. Removing it is now table stakes for keeping your home insured.
Do you have to tear down all the walls?
No. We map the existing K&T runs first, then fish modern grounded cable through walls, ceilings, and floor cavities with minimal access cuts. Most jobs need a handful of small drywall patches, not a full gut.
How long does a full K&T replacement take?
A typical 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft Oshawa or Whitby home with active K&T takes one to two weeks. Smaller targeted removals (a single floor, attic only) take two to four days.
Will I have power during the work?
Yes. We work circuit by circuit so the home stays powered. Specific rooms or panels may be offline for a few hours at a time during cutovers.
Do I get an ESA certificate when it’s done?
Yes. Every K&T replacement we do is permitted, inspected, and certified by ESA. You get the certificate for your insurer.
